Painted box car red with white lettering in February of 1973, this 50' standard box car, single door, without roofwalk is an example of a troop sleeper converted into a box car. Built in July, 1943, this car is nearly as tall as the 86' hi-cube cars used by the auto parts industries. The Alaska Railroad is a descendent of 2 short lines, the Alaska Northern Railway, and the Tanana Valley Railway. Ownership of the railroad was transferred to the State of Alaska in 1985.
