In 1932, the Pennsylvania Railroad designed a class of box car to be used for hauling automobiles. In order to maintain a required 10' internal clearance with its autoloaders raised out of the way, and be able to clear low tunnel and stone bridge arches common in the east, the roof sheets were curved at the edge. Because this shape resembled a covered wagon, they were termed "round roof" or "wagontop" cars. Most rode on 50-ton capacity trucks with coil springs and an elliptic leaf spring, and were painted in pre-1953 iron sesqui-oxide with white lettering on the sides and ends.
