This 33’ twin bay hopper with notched arch ends and offset sides is aluminum color with black letters. Its construction is the result of experimentation with aluminum fabricating techniques borne out of WW II aircraft manufacturing technology. Those methods were applied to these hoppers during rebuilding by C&O at Raceland, Kentucky in January 1948. Ironically, because of its corrosive interaction with coal, it was the use of aircraft grade aluminum that ended this experiment. Had marine grade aluminum been used, this problem could have been avoided.
