Number 33324 was built in March 1942. It is a 33' twin bay hopper, arch end, offset side and is painted black with white lettering. The Nickel Plate Road, now merged with Norfolk & Western, was officially known as the New York, Chicago & St. Louis. It began business in 1881 with a 533-mile arrow-straight line connecting Buffalo and Chicago. The nickname 'Nickel Plate Road' is derived from a derogatory pun published about the railroad in its early days by the Norwalk Chronicle. This 2081 cu ft capacity coal car was built with arch ends to allow greater heap (above level loading) and reduce spillage during transport and loading. These hoppers were designed with eight different end configurations and used mostly by coal-hauling eastern railroads. Other commodities not requiring weather protection were also carried. They were often interchanged and mixed types were often dispatched in long consists.
