This 3 bay ACF Center Flow® covered hopper with elongated hatches was built by American Car and Foundry in August 1981. #1018 is one of 29 hoppers that were purchased by WSDOT in the fall of 1994 and was painted in August of 1995 for the WSDOT Grain Train Program. The paint scheme was developed by a WDSDOT graphic designer who is also an N-Scale modeler. The body’s paint, safety lime yellow, is the same color as all WSDOT highway equipment. The blue, green, and orange wheat stalks are the official WSDOT colors worn by the Washington State Ferries. The cars were painted by Pacific Railcar in Yakima and Finley, Washington. The WSDOT Program (with the involvement of Port of Walla Walla, the Blue Mountain Railroad and four local grain co-ops) was initiated to prevent loss of rail service in eastern Washington.
