Commissioned in 1752, the Liberty Bell was placed in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House, a building known today as Independence Hall. The bell cracked on the first ring, and was recast by local metalworkers John Pass and John Stow. After being recast it had nearly 90 years of use before the famous split appeared in the early 1840s.
