The Battle
of Midway in 1942 is regarded by many historians as the most important
operation of the Pacific Campaign during World War II. This was
the first time that aircraft
carriers from opposing sides launched strikes against each other.
The Japanese deployed
4 large carriers, the Kaga, Akagi, Soryu and the Hiryu in an effort
to sink the 3 American
carriers, the Enterprise, Hornet and the damaged Yorktown defending
Midway Island.
This commemorative
seven-car freight set features all seven of the aircraft carriers
involved in the Battle of Midway. Each of these colorful cars
feature a color rendering of
the aircraft carrier, the carrier’s name and the date of the
battle.
