This
39’ single dome tank car is aluminum with multi-colored logo and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. Built in the early 1920s by American Car & Foundry, it was owned by
General American Tank Car Company and later leased to Gibson Wine Company. Gibson
was incorporated in 1939 in Sanger, California, and continues to operate to this
day.

Car #2
This
3-dome tank car is aluminum with black and red lettering and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Foppiano, an Italian immigrant and gold prospector,
Foppiano Wine survived prohibition and prospered in the 1930s. By the mid-1940s,
Foppiano had become the second largest winery in northern California. Still in
business today, Foppiano’s most famous wine is a Petite Sirah.

This
39’ single dome tank car is aluminum with red lettering and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. Roma Wine Company was founded in Lodi, California in the early 1900s.
It soon became the largest winery in the industry with twelve production facilities
spread across California. Roma was often seen as an industry leader and innovator,
surviving prohibition by producing sacramental wine, and after the 1930s produced
over 30 different varieties. Roma was sold to Schenley Industries in the early
1940s, and continued to market the Roma brand through the 1970s.

This
40’ double-sheathed wood reefer is brown with orange sides and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. Owned by California Dispatch Line, and leased by Bear Creek Vineyard Association
of Lodi, California, this car was technically a tank car in function, despite
having the exterior form of a reefer. Commonly seen with CDLX cars, this TW class
car had six large wood tanks inside and the exterior wood sheathing helped to
further protect the car from the elements.

Ambrose Wine Company This
3-dome tank car is aluminum with red lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks.
Called “One of America’s Great Bottlers of Fine California Wines,” Ambrose Wine
Company of Kansas City, Missouri, was a reseller that partnered with other wineries
and vineyards to both import and distribute domestic wine in the United States.

Pirrone & Sons This
39’ single dome tank car is aluminum with black belly and runs on Bettendorf trucks.
Built by American Car & Foundry in May 1937 for Shippers Car Line, and leased
for Pirrone & Sons California Wines, this car belonged to a 5-car series.
Pirrone & Sons was founded by Frank Pirrone, Jr, who purchased vineyards in
Salida, California in 1919, originally as a grape supplier, and entered the wine
producing business in 1936.

Tipo Table Wines This
40’ double-sheathed wood reefer is brown with yellow sides and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. Built in the 1910s for California Dispatch Line, this reefer was decorated
for the Italian Swiss Colony Winery, producing Tipo brand red and white wines.
Based in Asti, California, Italian Swiss Colony was a leading winemaker in California
in the early 1900s. Purchased by Petri Wine in 1953, the company was then rebranded
and merged multiple times. In 2015, the descendant company, Vitner, announced
Tipo brand would be re-introduced to market.

Petri Wine Co. This
3-dome tank car is aluminum with red and black lettering and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. In the early 1950s, Petri Wine Co. was the largest producer of wine in
the United States. During prohibition, Petri was able to stay in business by temporarily
ceasing wine production and diversifying their manufacturing, entering the leather
and cigar business until they were able to resume wine production.

Chateau Martin This
39’ single dome tank car is aluminum with black lettering and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. This 6,000-gallon tank car was built in 1940 in Milton, PA for Commodities
Car Company. It was leased to Eastern Wine Corporation, owners of the Chateau
Martin Wine Brand. Chateau Martin’s famous winery was in Waterford, California,
and bulk shipped finished wine to the Bronx, New York, where it was bottled.

Garrett Wine Company This
36’ wood sheathed ice reefer, with modern underframe is white with black lettering
and runs on Arch Bar trucks. Built by Berwick in 1912, this insulated car contained
glass tanks to carry wine from Garrett Wine Company to distributers. Garrett Wine
Company was established in 1835 in North Carolina, and famously used the Scuppernong
grape variety in their “Virginia Dare” product.

trucks. Built by ACF in April 1937, this car was owned by Shippers Car Line Corporation,
and leased to Northern California Wineries. It featured an insulated tank and
expansion domes to protect its precious fermented cargo.

Fruit Industries This
39’ single dome tank car is aluminum with red lettering and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. During prohibition, wine grape growers in California were desperate to
find alternative to wine production that allowed their vineyards to be profitable.
Fruit Industries Limited was founded with a product called “Vine-Glo – Wine Haven
Pure Grape Concentrate,” a thick juice paste that could be fermented into wine
in the consumer’s own home. The company later produced jellies, syrups, and vinegars.
