With a Kansas City
Southern reporting mark, this Golden West Service hopper with
Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in the 1970s and was
used for bulk grain service in the Midwest. In an attempt to
raise capital, in the late 1980s Southern Pacific created
Golden West Service which was a program that re-built
old SP, SSW and D&RGW freight cars and sold them to various
short lines. The Golden West Service program was mostly unsuccessful
and relatively short-lived.
