BNSF Family Tree Series


BNSF was formed through the mergers of Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and Burlington Northern. BN also formed through several mergers of some of the largest West-coast Class 1 railroads, including Great Northern and Northern Pacific. This 8-car series features prototype-weathered and patched paint schemes representing the major constituent heritage railroads in BNSF family tree.

BNSF Family Tree Series, Car#1

Burlington Northern/ex-CB&Q
This 3-bay covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in April 1967 by American Car & Foundry for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. In 1970, CB&Q, SP&S, GN, and NP merged to form Burlington Northern, and this 3-bay Centerflow covered hopper was repainted into BN Green. Burlington Northern continued to operate until 1996, when it merged with ATSF to form BNSF.

BNSF Family Tree Series, Car#2

Spokane, Portland and Seattle
This 40’ box car with Bettendorf trucks was built for the Spokane, Portland and Seattle and operated in general freight until it was restenciled into BN markings for MOW service in the early 1970s. The Spokane, Portland and Seattle was a railroad in Washington and Oregon incorporated in 1905 as a joint venture between Great Northern and Northern Pacific. It operated until 1970, when it was rolled into Burlington Northern.

BNSF Family Tree Series, Car#3

BNSF/ex-Great Northern
Built by Great Northern in the late 1950s, this 50’ double-door boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was later relegated to Green Veneer service. The “A” side doors were removed, and the opening staked with larger timber. The “B” side doors remained, though welded shut.

BNSF Family Tree Series, Car#4

BNSF/ex-Northern Pacific
This 40’ high cube boxcar with Roller Bearing trucks was built in 1967 at the Northern Pacific Brainerd Shops and was used in an appliance shipping capacity. Northern Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1864, and eventually acquired in 1970 by Burlington Northern Railroad through mergers, which went on to merge with Santa Fe, becoming BNSF.

BNSF Family Tree Series, Car#5

This 36’ riveted steel caboose with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1927 for Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe by American Car & Foundry. It was then obtained by the Frisco, and later merged into Burlington Northern.

This 56’ tank car with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built for Burlington Northern and later patched for BNSF. Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific in 1970, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF.

This ATSF combination door 50’ boxcar with Roller Bearing trucks was patched for BNSF and used as a MOW rail train buffer car.

Built in 1975 by American Car & Foundry for the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, this two-bay covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was merged into Burlington Northern, and then BNSF in 1995.
