CSX®
Family Tree Series
CSX Transportation®
was formed through the mergers of Chessie System® and Seaboard System,®
both of which also formed through mergers. It later absorbed roughly half of Conrail,
and continues to operate as one of the largest East-coast Class 1 railroads. This
11-car series features prototype-weathered and patched paint schemes representing
the major constituent heritage railroads in CSX’s® family tree. |

CSX®/ex.
B&O®
This 3-bay covered hopper with elongated hatches is grey with
black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built
by ACF in 1967 for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, this three-bay
4,700 cubic-foot covered hopper was merged into the Chessie fleet
in 1979, and eventually received a paintout and restenciling for
CSX Railroad.

CSXT®/ex-WM
This 2-bay covered hopper is tan with black lettering and runs
on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1970 for Western Maryland,
this 2,970 cubic-foot capacity hopper eventually made its way
to CSX in the 1980s and was used to transport high-density granular
commodities such as sand.

is green with white and yellow lettering and runs on Roller Bearing
trucks. Built in the 1960s, this ex-Seaboard Air Line boxcar was
patched for Seaboard Coast Line. Seaboard Air Line was founded
in 1900 and existed until 1967 when it merged with the Atlantic
Coast Line Railroad, forming the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.
At its height, it had over 4,000 miles of track across the South.

This 40’
box car with Bettendorf trucks was built for the Louisville &
Nashville at part of a 250-car series. The L&N was a Class
I railroad with just over 6,000 miles of track across the South-east
US, before being merged into Seaboard System in the early 1980s.
Seaboard Air Line merged with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in
1967, forming the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which was then
renamed Seaboard System in 1982.

This ex-Chessie
System 3-bay hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks eventually
was merged into CSX Transportation’s fleet of hopper cars and
received paint-out patches. Chessie System was formed through
the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio,
and Western Maryland. It remained one of the largest East coast
railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie
to form today’s rail giant, CSX Transportation.

Built in
October 1971 for New York Central/Penn Central, this 50’ gondola
with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was used for Coil Steel Loading
through its later Conrail acquisition, eventually becoming a Maintenance
of Way car for CSX’s scrap railroad ties. CSX was formed through
the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System/ Family
Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000
miles of track in the Eastern United States.

Weathered Family Tree Series Car #11
Built in
the late 1960s by the General American Transportation Company
for the Chesapeake & Ohio, this 50’ Airslide Covered Hopper
with Barber Roller Bearing trucks eventually made it into CSX
paint. With a special epoxy lining, these cars were specifically
designed for use with fine-grained commodities, like powdered
sugar, that could settle en-route making unloading difficult.
