Car Series
Special food-grade
tank cars have been used to transport a variety of sweet concentrates
from distribution centers to factories all over the United States.
Commodities such as corn syrup, cane syrup, honey, molasses and
others were commonly shipped in bulk by rail in heated tank cars
to processing plants, chocolate factories, breweries and soft drink
factories. Sometimes adorned by bright and flashy artwork, they
were colorful “stand-outs” in any manifest freight train. This Sweet
Liquid Tank Car Series will feature twelve prototypically accurate

This 39’
single dome tank car is yellow with blue belly and runs on Bettendorf
trucks. Built in October 1949, and serviced in 1961, this car
belonged to a series of 8 cars painted similarly for the St. Lawrence
Starch Company of Port Credit, Ontario. Used to transport corn
syrup, they could be found in service between Port Credit and
numerous candy and food companies in eastern Canada through the
early 1980s.

This 39’
single dome tank car is black with white lettering and runs on
Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1957, this uninsulated tank car was
owned by NATX and leased to the Hubinger Company of Keokuk, Iowa,
and was used for corn syrup loading. The J.C. Hubinger Brothers
Company was founded in 1887 and was a producer of starch.

This 39’
single dome tank car is grey with black lettering and runs on
Bettendorf trucks. Owned by General American Transportation Corp.
and leased to Flo-Sweet Refined Syrups and Sugars Inc. Flo-Sweet,
based in Yonkers, NY, was the first domestic producer of liquid
sugar, with first production in 1927. Previously, liquid sugars
were imported from Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

This 39’
single dome tank car is black with white lettering and runs on
Arch Bar trucks. Lettered for the Miranda Sugar Company, this
insulated and heated tank car was built in 1919 for the Warner
Sugar Refining Company, of Edgewater, N.J. In 1927, Warner was
purchased by the National Sugar Refining Company, becoming the
largest producer of refined sugar in the United States at the
time.

This 39’
single dome tank car is grey with red and yellow herald and runs
on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1960, this DOT103W class tank car
was owned by General American Transportation Corporation and leased
to Domino Foods, Inc. for use in liquid cane sugar processing.
Founded in 1901 in New York, Domino Foods quickly became a renowned
brand in the United States. Today, Domino Foods is the largest
sugar company in the USA, with three large sugar refineries on
the East Coast.

Bettendorf trucks. Lettered for the H.J. Gilbert Company of Savannah,
GA, this insulated and heated tank car was built in 1926. Molasses
is a product resulting from refining sugarcane or sugar beets,
and is used as a sweetener and flavorant in foods and is also
used in the beer brewing process.

Bettendorf trucks. Imperial Sugar was founded in 1843 by Samuel
May Williams in Sugar Land, Texas, and today is one of the largest
U.S. sugar producers. This car was owned by General American Transportation
Corporation and leased to Imperial to carry liquified sugar products
from their Texas refinery to various distributors across the country.

Bettendorf trucks. Built in the mid-1950s for the Thomas E. Snyder
Sons Company, a molasses shipper founded in 1941 and based in
Chicago, Ill. This car was used through the early 1960s to carry
liquified sugar products across the country from refineries to
various distributors.

single dome tank car is black with white lettering and runs on
Archbar trucks. Built in April 1920, this car was owned and operated
by the W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining Company based in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. This 50-ton, non-insulated car had an 8,105 gallon
capacity. The W.J. McCahan Company was founded in 1892, and in
1944 was sold to the American Sugar Refining Company.

trucks. Built in 1921 by General American, this GATX-owned tank
car was leased to Union Starch & Refining Co., of Granite
City, Illinois. Used to carry corn-syrup and other liquids used
in the commercial sugar manufacturing industry, it was used through
the 1950s before being retired.

1926 by American Car & Foundry, this single-dome, 8,000-gallon
tank car with Archbar trucks was owned by Mangels, Herold Co.
Inc, a syrup manufacturer based in Baltimore, Maryland. Mangels
first produced their famous “King Syrup” in 1901, a corn and sugar
combination, often used to accompany pancakes, waffles and other
breakfast items across the United States as “America’s Finest
Table Syrup!”
