For twenty-one years beginning in 1949, the California Zephyr with its famous vista dome observtion cars pampered nearly two million passengers as they traveled between San Francisco and Chicago. Although it was not the fastest route to the west coast, it had the best scenery and became known as the "most talked abut train in America."
