• Make sure the engine runs as expected under normal DC. If the engine does not run well please do not proceed. Installing a decoder will not make it run any better. Please correct any problems before continuing.
• Test the decoder. There is nothing more frustrating than installing a decoder only to find a problem. You don't know whether the decoder was defecting before you started or if you did something wrong. Prove to yourself that the decoder is worth your time to install. I built a very simple decoder tester, details will be added as time permits.
• Remove the shell. I have found these fairly easy by first lifting up the back end of the shell.

• Remove the light board by pulling it gently to the rear of the engine and then up.
