Founded in
1982 through the mergers of Norfolk & Western and the Southern
Railway, Norfolk Southern grew further in the late 1990s with the
acquisition of just over half of the trackage and assets of Conrail
Corporation. Today, NS is one of the largest Class 1 Railroads with
over 30,000 employees and operates nearly 22,000 miles of track
in the Eastern and Midwestern United States. |

Akron, Canton
& Youngstown
This 50' boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was lettered
for the Akron, Canton & Youngstown, which was a Class 1 railroad
that operated between Mogadore and Akron, Ohio from 1907 until
1982. In 1964, the Norfolk & Western Railway acquired operating
control of the AC&Y and it was fully merged into the N&W
in 1982.

Family Tree Series, Car #2
This insulated
boxcar was built for American Refrigerator Transit, or ART, and
leased by Norfolk & Western. These cars featured Car-Pac Loaders,
insulated walls, and plug doors to maintain cold temperatures
that could previously only be accomplished by blocks of ice. Norfolk
& Western was known as the “King Coal” line, and was a Class
1 railroad headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia. Today, it is now
part of the Norfolk Southern system following a 1980 merger with
Southern Railway.

Built for
the Illinois Terminal, this 50’ flat car with Barber Roller Bearing
trucks made its way to the Norfolk & Western roster and was
later patched with a new reporting mark. It is now in MOW service
with Norfolk Southern. The Illinois Terminal was founded in 1896
and operated until 1982, when it was merged with the Norfolk &
Western Railway. It operated trackage in Central Illinois and
Missouri.

This 50'
fixed end gondola with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built
by Pullman-Standard in April 1964 for Nickel Plate Road. It was
later absorbed into the Norfolk & Western system, and finally
became part of Norfolk Southern.

Built in 1939
and belonging to series 125000-125999, this H33-class two bay
coal hopper with Bettendorf trucks was later rolled into N&W.
The Virginian Railway was a Class 1 railroad that was founded
in 1907 to transport high quality bituminous coal from West Virginia
mines to Hampton Roads ports. In 1959, the Virginian merged into
N&W, now Norfolk Southern.
